They’ll be travelling the globe to gain new insights into different countries unique culinary cultures, trying local cuisines, and getting up to plenty of shenanigans.
Ever since they first met on the set of The Lord of the Rings film series back in 1999, in which they portrayed the hobbits Merry and Pippin, actors Billy Boyd and Dominic Monaghan have developed a close friendship in the years. The on-screen “bromance” between their characters has transcended Middle Earth to the real world. The two actors still manage to get up to plenty of mischief and shenanigans and remain part of each other’s lives.
This travel series will follow Billy and Dom to eight different locations around the world - London, Manchester, Scotland, California, Texas, Japan, Switzerland and Costa Rica - each with their own unique culinary culture.
In every episode, the two actors will explore the flavours on offer – seeking out local dishes, some famous, and some new. They’ll explore the way these foods are cultivated, cooked and served in each country for a deeper understanding of how and why each place they visit developed its unique cuisine.
But you’ve got to earn your meal, so Billy and Dom will be put to work! Whether its cattle herding in the countryside or running the busiest market stalls in a hectic and vibrant city. They’ll be thrust into the centre of everything, getting involved, trying and (probably) failing to keep up with the locals.
In true hobbit style, Billy and Dom will wander on foot, searching the hidden side of cities, hunting down their next adventure, taking recommendations, changing plans as they embark on their quest to Eat the World.
In the first episode the comedy duo visit their friend Sir Ian McKellen in his London pub, The Grapes, on the bank of the river Thames, where they reminisce about their time together during the filming of The Lord of the Rings.
SPECIAL EPISODE - POLAND
Billy and Dom visit Wroclaw in Poland, the capital of the Lower Silesia region where the cuisine is a melting pot of Polish, German and Czech traditions. In one of Europe’s oldest restaurants they learn how to make Pierogi, one of Poland’s most famous exports, as well as Paczki (Polish yeast doughnuts) and even explore a historic castle as they gear themselves up for some mushroom foraging in true Hobbit style.
SPECIAL EPISODE - GEORGIA
Billy and Dom head into the heart of the Caucasus, Georgia, where the ancient tradition of wine making goes hand in hand with the art of toasting. They learn the precision with which mouthwatering Khachapuri (Georgian cheese bread) is made, find out the secret behind the 8,000 year old tradition of making wine in Kvevris (giant clay vessels) and visit a Georgian Bath for a relaxing “surprise”.
