The sinking of the RMS Titanic is one of the most famous real-life tragedies of all time – transfixing generations around the world. We owe so much of what we know today about that fateful night in 1912 to the fact that the wreck was finally discovered in 1985 by a team of US and French scientists and explorers.
This is the story of how that needle in a haystack operation happened, told by some of the key players on the expedition – one of whom has never spoken about it before.
EPISODE 1
Episode 1 recounts how several unsuccessful attempts were made to locate the wreck including by a salvage treasure hunter. Then, in the 1980’s, Texan oil billionaire Jack Grimm used his money to fund the latest sonar and camera technology to attempt to find the ship. He even tries to take a pet monkey on the expedition.
EPISODE 2
Episode 2 picks up the search for the famous liner following billionaire Jack Grimm’s unsuccessful expeditions. Scientist and explorer Robert Ballard uses the cover of secret US Navy missions looking for lost nuclear submarines to search for the wreck. By combining with French researchers and their cutting-edge tech the team scours the ocean floor.
