THE MAYA: WAR OF THE KINGDOMS

There never was a Maya Empire. In the 6th Century, Central America was divided into kingdoms locked in a fierce struggle for dominance. This series tells their story.

For more than three centuries, the Maya Lowlands were shaped by relentless rivalry between powerful city-states. Never unified into a single empire, the Maya world was ruled by divine kings whose authority rested on warfare, diplomacy, ritual legitimacy, and control of vital trade networks. At the heart of this struggle stood two dominant powers: Tikal, the kingdom of the Jaguar, and Calakmul, the realm of the Serpent kings.

This four-part series traces the rise, confrontation, and eventual collapse of this political system, drawing on archaeology, epigraphy, and environmental science to reconstruct one of the most complex power struggles of the ancient world. From the early expansion of Tikal and the dramatic intervention of Teotihuacan, to the long Cold War between Jaguar and Serpent dynasties, the series reveals how alliances, betrayals, and calculated military campaigns shaped the destiny of dozens of Maya kingdoms.

As Tikal finally breaks the power of Calakmul, the balance of the Lowlands shifts—but victory comes at a cost. The fall of the Serpent kings triggers political fragmentation, renewed warfare, and mounting pressure on resources. Droughts, deforestation, water contamination, and demographic stress gradually undermine the divine authority of Maya rulers, whose legitimacy depended on their ability to guarantee abundance and cosmic order.

The series culminates in the unraveling of the divine kingship itself. Cities are abandoned, dynasties fade, and the Classic Maya political model collapses—not through sudden catastrophe, but through the convergence of environmental stress and systemic instability. Yet the story does not end with disappearance. As this series shows, Maya societies adapt, migrate, and endure, carrying their cultures, languages, and traditions far beyond the ruins left behind.

An unprecedented archaeology series that is character driven and that mixes present-day archaeology and history with ancient history scenes brought to life with AI. A story filled with exciting events with twists and turns similar to a true drama series.
