Principal Photography has begun on Catch Me a Killer from MNet/Showmax and Night Train Media. Based on the memoir of the same name by Micki Pistorius, the project is directed by Tracey Larcombe (Innocent), and adapted for the screen by Amy Jephta (Barakat, Trackers) and Jess Ruston (Young Wallander, Around the World in 80 Days).
Leading the cast as Micki is Charlotte Hope (The Spanish Princess, Game of Thrones). Catch Me a Killer is Executive Produced by Simon Howley of CMAK Films alongside Herbert L. Kloiber, Olivia Pahl and James Copp of Night Train Media (Rogue Agent). International sales are handled by Abacus Media Rights.
Set in the mid-90s, the series is based on the autobiography of Micki Pistorius, South Africa’s first serial killer profiler. Set against a backdrop of rising crime and mass murder, the episodes follow six turbulent years that Micki spent tracking down South Africa’s most feared killers as a newly qualified forensic psychologist. While confronting darkness on her quest to understand these infamous killers, this flawed, yet determined protagonist will also have to deal with the looming spectre of her personal life.
Shooting has commenced in Cape Town, with the production also filming in Pretoria and other parts of rural South Africa, recreating the turbulent socio-political times of the post-apartheid era. Catch Me a Killer will exclusively premiere on M-Net (DStv Channel 101)/Showmax in 2023.
Herbert L. Kloiber commented: “We are thrilled to bring this unique and unapologetic show to screens, drawing back the curtain on a fascinating time, place and person.”
Charlotte Hope said: "It is always a challenge and a privilege to recreate a real life character and Micki is no exception. Micki herself told me that psychologists and actors have very similar psychometric profiles and it is such an honour to dive into the mind of this powerful and trailblazing woman, as she in turn dives into the minds of the many characters that bind this dark and fascinating world together."
Micki Pistorius explained: "It's a fascinating process to watch my life dramatised, and we are thrilled to have such a talented actress as Charlotte on board." Simon Howley added: "Bringing this book to the screen has been a labour of love for us and the talented production team led by Tracey Larcombe have exceeded our expectations in creating the atmosphere and intensity of the story."
Executive Head of Content at Showmax Allan Sperling and Yolisa Phahle, CEO, added “MultiChoice Group remains committed to being part of multiple co-productions with global partners, and we’re happy to add more titles to the growing list. We are proud to continue expanding such partnerships further to the benefit of all involved, be they in front of the camera or behind the scenes.”
