Justine Gamache has returned to Anticosti, the island of her birth, for the first time in seven years, hoping to learn about her origins. It’s a peaceful place, without police, where game warden Michael St-Germain exercises authority over the untamed territory.

Justine arrives at Port-Menier for a public reading of her first novel – a festive occasion organized by her best friend Sophie. But the usually tight-knit community is bitterly divided over the planned construction of a new luxury hotel complex that threatens the island’s ecosystem. On one side, Justine’s mother Sylvie and her sister Mélanie are at the heart of the environmental struggle, supported by the Innu community of Quebec’s lower North Shore. In the opposing camp are many citizens who see the hotel as a welcome opportunity to jumpstart the island economy and create jobs in this isolated region.

The day after the reading, everyone is shocked when a woman is found dead at the base of a cliff. The police quickly pronounce the death a suicide. But Justine rejects this finding. She teams up with Michael to investigate independently, seeking to uncover the truth.
